BootyBeats [Alt.Ctrl Game]
A downloadable game
“A group of really drunk friends fight over loose quarters to see who gets to hear their favorite song - and it isn’t over until the janitor sings…”
What is Booty Beats?
Booty Beats is a 4-player free-for-all party game where each player must look for coins, play their favorite song in 'the jukebox', and protect it from other players who want to hear their tunes.
Who made it?
- Diogo Guerreiro
- Pedro Fernandes
- Raquel Correia
The game was created during an [Alt.Ctrl Game] workshop, within the Masters in Game Design and Playful Media at Universidade Lusófona, led by Tatiana Vilela dos Santos (a.k.a. MechBird).
How do you play it?
Setup
The silver coins players must insert into the jukebox are scattered on the play area with confetti and other materials. Each player is assigned a color corresponding to a button on the jukebox, and are given a pair of distorted glasses that obstruct their vision along with a bottle that they must hold at all times.
Playing the game
Once a player finds a coin on the floor and inserts it into 'the jukebox', they can press the button with their color to play their song. They then have to keep other players away from the jukebox as they try to insert coins to play their own songs.
Win condition: The first player to have their song play for a total of 30 seconds wins.
How is it Alt Ctrl?
Booty Beats is played on a cardboard structure that represents the jukebox - and the janitor working on it. The structure has an arduino that is connected to the buttons players can press on the jukebox, and the sensors that detect when a coin (made of cardboard wrapped in aluminum) is inserted. The arduino then connects to a computer running the game, which sends the visual information to the tablet that is integrated into the cardboard jukebox.
- 1 Arduino board
